From an internship to a trainee role: How a first step led to new prospects

A new team, unexpected challenges and many new experiences: my internship in the Group Employer Branding & Experience Team quickly became more than just an insight into social media work. It showed me how much can happen when you trust your skills and embrace new tasks.

Right at the start of my internship, a major project I had not anticipated was waiting for me: I was asked if I would like to cover the T-Challenge on site and conduct interviews with the international participants – in English. My first thought: this is going to be challenging. I had already conducted many interviews during my time in radio, but mainly in German.

Nevertheless, I agreed. After the first interviews, my nerves quickly subsided. Among others, I interviewed participants from Stanford University – who went on to win the T-Challenge – learnt more about the key topic of artificial intelligence and got a behind-the-scenes look at an international event production.

Taking on an unexpected challenge

Before my internship, I studied journalism and worked in radio and television. There, I learnt how to present content concisely and clearly, while ensuring it was authentic and tailored to the target audience. This experience also helps me in the social media team – even though much of the work is still new to me.

I was fully integrated into the team right from the start and saw how a brainstorming session turns into a finished post. It usually starts with one key question: what do we want to convey – and, above all, to whom?

This leads to further considerations: which platform is best for the topic? What works on Instagram, and what works on LinkedIn? And how should a post be structured to attract attention and achieve reach?

Learning how social media strategy works

For me, this means further developing my journalistic approach and thinking more in terms of images, short formats and clear messages.

At the same time, it has become even more important for me to trust my instincts – whether I am facing new challenges or deciding whether a trend is a good fit for the company.

Over time, I realised that I am interested not only in content production, but also in strategic communication. I am drawn to the diversity of corporate communications: new formats, different target audiences and topics that go beyond social media.

Why the trainee path felt right

So, when the opportunity for a trainee programme arose, this step felt like the right one for me. I can build on my experience while also getting to know new areas and broadening my perspective on communication.

My journey has shown me that a career change does not have to mean leaving your previous experience behind. On the contrary: new challenges can help you grow, while your existing skills can open doors in unexpected places. For me, the internship was the first step towards a new direction – and my journey at Telekom is only beginning.
