Choosing a career I Telekom Careers Blog
Choosing a career? Here’s how!
How do you choose the right career with so many options? Trainee Filip explains how he chose his profession as a retail management assistant. Additionally, Telekom has created new media to simplify career choice and job searching.
Over 50 percent of young people feel overwhelmed by the amount of information available when choosing the right career. No surprise there. In Germany alone, there are over 9,000 bachelor's degree programs, 1,600 dual study programs, and 327 vocational training occupations.
Filip chose a profession at Telekom: retail sales assistant. The trainee tells us how he made his decision and shares tips for others currently exploring career options.
How did you research career choices?
Filip: At the very beginning, I actually went to the Federal Employment Agency. A close relative who worked there recommended, “Check out Telekom!” That was the trigger for me to look more closely into Telekom as an employer and to get a sense of whether it could be the right fit for me.
When did you start thinking about your career choice?
Filip: That started for me in 10th grade. About six months before applying, I began looking more closely at different vocational training careers.
Why did you choose this particular apprenticeship?
Filip: I'm a very communicative person, and the job description for retail sales assistant really matched that. I enjoy talking to people. I think I’m good at understanding others and approaching them - that was even part of the job description.
What do you enjoy about your training at Telekom?
Filip: I get to interact with customers every day. I really enjoy getting them excited about Telekom’s products. That direct contact with customers - that's definitely what I enjoy the most.
What strengths do you bring to your job?
Filip: I'm good with people and very socially oriented. I think that’s one of my strengths in my personal life, and I can apply it really well at work, too.
What tips would you give others when it comes to choosing a career?
Filip: I’d definitely recommend focusing on your own strengths. Like, what do you enjoy doing in your free time - with friends or in sports? Your hobbies show what you’re good at and what you’re not really into. If you know your strengths, it’s much easier to find a job that suits you.
